Visual Arts, Columbia University, New York

This course examines ways of looking and ways of seeing, both personally & professionally as artists and in a larger cultural context. Through field trips to contemporary art and other cultural sites, conversations with visiting critical thinkers and practicioners, readings, discussions, and visual & written responses, we will examine how we look, think, act, create and respond--critically questioning our own artistic practices and ways of looking at the world.

Prompt 4: Change your world (ZK)

For my response this week, I attached the following image. To me, there is no better way to affect/effect those around us than through the use of stories. Telling a story, on a small scale or large scale, is the clearest, and most effective way of conveying a message. In order to make change on any level, we could can all try to become better story tellers. In doing so, we become that much more affective/effective.

My favorite modern storyteller is Malcolm Gladwell. I attached a two videos of his which convey two very different ideas in very different ways. The ultimate point on each story has nothing to do with the story itself, which is an interesting technique and one that should be used more. See what you think.
