Visual Arts, Columbia University, New York

This course examines ways of looking and ways of seeing, both personally & professionally as artists and in a larger cultural context. Through field trips to contemporary art and other cultural sites, conversations with visiting critical thinkers and practicioners, readings, discussions, and visual & written responses, we will examine how we look, think, act, create and respond--critically questioning our own artistic practices and ways of looking at the world.

JW: There is Nothing to See So We Look

British filmmaker Robbie Cooper has filmed a series called 'Immersion' kids faces as they play war games and watch war news. Part of a larger project called 'War and Leisure'. The footage and the still outtakes are stunning and intimate.

On Robbie's blog I found a link to Godfry Reggio's amazing film 'Evidence' kids faces as they watch the Disney film Dumbo.

After pulling these parts together and thinking about seeing for a bit I began to think about something regarding seeing that had crossed by my mind last semester. What happens when someone reads words and looks at a visual at the same time, the two activities create a third imagined territory. The expressions on these kids faces seems to register an exaggerated version that place to me, a much more complicated one. Because they are so raw and unguarded the response surfaces easily.
