Visual Arts, Columbia University, New York

This course examines ways of looking and ways of seeing, both personally & professionally as artists and in a larger cultural context. Through field trips to contemporary art and other cultural sites, conversations with visiting critical thinkers and practicioners, readings, discussions, and visual & written responses, we will examine how we look, think, act, create and respond--critically questioning our own artistic practices and ways of looking at the world.

Prompt 4: Change your world (BD)

The other night I woke from a terrible nightmare. In my dream, a new fashion trend had swept the nation. Women were wearing a garment that was a combination of leggings and toe-socks. Like all stupid fashion trends, this garment was given a catchy name, Froggings, due to their resemblance to the hindquarters of a frog. To make matters worse, the preferred color of Froggings was lime green.

The horror of this pants/gloves hybrid was enough to wake me from my slumber. Unlike most fleeting dreams, this fabric abomination continued to haunt me. The concept was simple, yet just dumb enough that Middle America would go crazy over them. Living in a culture where things like Pajama Jeans and Snuggies are not only acceptable but desired by many, I realized that I must never let Froggings see the light of day. (I understand that sharing the idea in this forum is somewhat counterintuitive, but I would hope that most who read this would agree that this product should never be manufactured.)

As artists, aren't we responsible for what we unleash on the world? If we have the power to affect the world in a positive way then we must be able to affect it adversely as well. Sometimes we can make the world a better place by keeping certain ideas to ourselves. If you could have prevented Twilight from ever being written or Hannah Montana from ever being aired on television, would you?
