Visual Arts, Columbia University, New York

This course examines ways of looking and ways of seeing, both personally & professionally as artists and in a larger cultural context. Through field trips to contemporary art and other cultural sites, conversations with visiting critical thinkers and practicioners, readings, discussions, and visual & written responses, we will examine how we look, think, act, create and respond--critically questioning our own artistic practices and ways of looking at the world.

Prompt 2

My dream exhibit would be in a space with two rooms and a connecting hallway. I would want Cecelia Condit to be the solo artist in the show. I would want her to have a video in the second room. In the first room that a viewer enters I would want large photoshop pictures that she describes as sculptures. The first room would also have music that Cecelia has helped write playing through the speakers. Her pieces are ethereal and calm so I would want the room to be large, open, and have a big window in the roof that lets light and fresh air in.

In the hallway that leads from the photo room to the video room there would be long white curtains slowly swaying back and forth. There would be a recording of the sound of the ocean shore playing softly in the hallway. Beneath the visitor’s feet the floor would be covered in a mirror with a varnish that makes it look like they are walking over water.
The last room would have the installation “Within a Stone’s Throw” playing. This room would also have white linen all around the room.  People would be encouraged to remove their shoes and the entire ground would be cushioned with mattresses.
