Visual Arts, Columbia University, New York

This course examines ways of looking and ways of seeing, both personally & professionally as artists and in a larger cultural context. Through field trips to contemporary art and other cultural sites, conversations with visiting critical thinkers and practicioners, readings, discussions, and visual & written responses, we will examine how we look, think, act, create and respond--critically questioning our own artistic practices and ways of looking at the world.

image

An image is a moment, captured;
the reflection of light in darkness in time.
The tangible made intangible
and back. A transformation.

An image is a mass of pixels
neurons traveling on individual paths
unaware of their own power
nothing when apart, everything when together.

An image is fact
refuting the lies of all other senses.
To see is to believe is to be
precise, true.

An image is it's own language
impermeable, resisting translation.
a fire reliant on both material and spiritual worlds
understood only by its creator.
