Visual Arts, Columbia University, New York

This course examines ways of looking and ways of seeing, both personally & professionally as artists and in a larger cultural context. Through field trips to contemporary art and other cultural sites, conversations with visiting critical thinkers and practicioners, readings, discussions, and visual & written responses, we will examine how we look, think, act, create and respond--critically questioning our own artistic practices and ways of looking at the world.

This is the aftermath of an image I drew on a chalkboard and then tried to erase. Just like the scariest monsters that your mind comes up with in your dreams, you can never fully erase them. The almost skeletal human face, with no nose and huge demon eyes give this monster a familiar eeriness. The eyes are almost reminiscent of those of a fly, so it is terrifying to imagine them at such huge proportions. And the positioning of the head also has the face looking down at you, as though it is much larger than the average person. The dark background with grey outlines is also very foreboding.
