Visual Arts, Columbia University, New York

This course examines ways of looking and ways of seeing, both personally & professionally as artists and in a larger cultural context. Through field trips to contemporary art and other cultural sites, conversations with visiting critical thinkers and practicioners, readings, discussions, and visual & written responses, we will examine how we look, think, act, create and respond--critically questioning our own artistic practices and ways of looking at the world.

Gallery Walk : February 2013

Hmmmm

Going through this list reminded me of sifting through radio stations.
What do I feel like today? Rock, some-thing classic  or maybe...

I am alone, so I listen to....

I share with you so I will pick?
back to the gallery and artists.

my eye fell on Darren Almond. When I was 13 I briefly fell in love with a boy named Darren. He raced hackney ponies and looked sexy in his silks, ripping by at the speed of light. I didn't know any better.  Darren Almond the artist is from Wigen near Lancashire England so that was interesting. The English are profoundly well educated and cultured. Almost any taxi driver will put you to shame with a greater grasp of world history and geography than yours. They bet on anything and everything and come tea time really want a pint. They also have a great sense of humor and when in the country,  don't mind having sheep wandering in the kitchen as they eat eat their porridge.

Lancashire trivia: The people from this region are known as Lancastrians.  Lancashire, as most of G. Britain, had some part in the Industrial Revolution. By the 1830's approximately 85% of the world's cotton was processed there.
& now what do they do?
According to Wikipedia, Today the largest private industry is the defense industry with BAE Systems Military Air Solutions division based in Warton on the Fylde coast. Other defense firms include BAE Systems Global Combat Systems...

Read on---please.

Other defence firms include BAE Systems Global Combat Systems and Rolls-Royce plc.

Did you know that Rolls Royce doesn't just make beautiful cars?  - they do aircraft engines and it seems they have major businesses related to defense systems, being the world's 18th largest defense contractor.

I believe we are all affected somehow by our background and what we experienced growing up. Positive or negative, sometimes both. We glean unconsciously and consciously from this resource.

I'll try to write more about Darren and why I'd like to see his art.

Darren Almond Traction, 1999 three part video installtion duration 28 minutes Courtesy of White Cube, London

Darren's mediums up to now have been photography, film, and sculpture. His past works cue to an interest in time, especially transient time. He also explores questions of labor, place, the elements, history, and memory.
The above video, a still from Traction, 1999 deals with some of these issues. Especially those of his roots in Wigan, his parents' darker relationship with industrial work, and the physical and emotional scars it left on his father (and mother) as individuals.

His present show in Chelsea "Hemispheres and Continents," exhibiting a series of differing global landscapes using full moon photography explores concepts of simultaneity, light, and the photographic process.
