Visual Arts, Columbia University, New York

This course examines ways of looking and ways of seeing, both personally & professionally as artists and in a larger cultural context. Through field trips to contemporary art and other cultural sites, conversations with visiting critical thinkers and practicioners, readings, discussions, and visual & written responses, we will examine how we look, think, act, create and respond--critically questioning our own artistic practices and ways of looking at the world.

Courtland Thomas – Black Painting (11/4)

A disappearing Dad.
A Mom who doesn't understand.
A suicidal best friend. (A 2-for-1 special.) (What does that say about you?)
A friend who knows your boyfriend cheats/ed on you.
An ex-boyfriend first-love-type-deal (with a side order of the cliché teen drama).
An ex-lover you met in Germany who doesn't return your love letters.
A Regina-George-of-a-boss who used her lessons against you.
A staff without respect for you.
A mentor who threatened to sue you.
A company without compensation for you.
An industry without a place for you.
A curriculum without flexibility for you.
A university without a major for you. (But one for everyone else.)
A city without empathy for you. (But that's why you moved here, isn't it?)
