Visual Arts, Columbia University, New York

This course examines ways of looking and ways of seeing, both personally & professionally as artists and in a larger cultural context. Through field trips to contemporary art and other cultural sites, conversations with visiting critical thinkers and practicioners, readings, discussions, and visual & written responses, we will examine how we look, think, act, create and respond--critically questioning our own artistic practices and ways of looking at the world.

Prompt 2

Callicoon Fine Arts is a fairly small gallery (from what I could see) but I was really drawn to it because I think that it could be a really amazing space to showcase performance. The front of the gallery looks out onto the street, showcasing the narrow interior as a storefront would. In my envisioning of this performance, the audience would be relegated to the street and the performer would exist within the confines of the gallery. This would mean that the performance would be viewed almost as if it was happening on a screen, or at least it would create a distance between the performer and spectator (similarly to a stage). Creating a performance within this space, especially one that was ongoing and occurring during the day, could potentially reach a different audience than those who would usually enter a gallery to view ‘performance art.’ I think that positioning the audience in this way could also increase the stakes of the performance because the audience would be unable to intervene.
