The Artists Formerly Known As Eye & Idea
Columbia University Visual Arts 2014
Visual Arts, Columbia University, New York
This course examines ways of looking and ways of seeing, both personally & professionally as artists and in a larger cultural context. Through field trips to contemporary art and other cultural sites, conversations with visiting critical thinkers and practicioners, readings, discussions, and visual & written responses, we will examine how we look, think, act, create and respond--critically questioning our own artistic practices and ways of looking at the world.

Prompt #3: Altering An Object
Took a q-tip, lit it on fire using a lighter, used the q-tip to light a candle, attempted to write with the charred base.
Through the process of "doing something" and then "doing something else" to my original object, the q-tip, I actually ended up changing the object itself, both physically and in function. Originally, the q-tip exists as a recognizable, quotidien object associated with hygiene and cleaning. After lighting the q-tip on fire, the object physically became different as the fire eliminated one of the cotton ends, but it also changed in function and became somewhat of a match stick which I then used to light a candle. After the candle was lit and the flame had been transferred and extinguished from the end of the q-tip, I attempted to write a word with the charred end of the stick, thus changing its shape and function again to a kind of makeshift pencil or writing utensil.
